Social Media Companies Weaponize Censorship

In under 1 year, I got shadowbanned on both the social media platforms X and Threads. I was censored by both Liberals and Conservatives, both Left and Right… but why?

The truth is — I dont know.

Nothing I’ve said breaks their terms and conditions, and I never received a notice, warning, or explanation. One day, I was just silenced.

I had no more than a couple hundred followers on both Threads and X and a couple thousand across my other platforms. All I shared on these platforms is promotions for my reporting, my honest opinions, and the occasional heated debate.

Nothing that could disrupt the system they built — Or could it?

It was only when I started gaining attention and traction on each platform that they made the decision to shut me down.

Elon’s X Supports Censorship

X, formerly known as Twitter, is run by conservative billionaire Elon Musk, who briefly served as part of the Trump administration from January to May 2025, as part of the Doge initiative.

Elon first bought Twitter in 2022, claiming that it was censoring conservative voices (It was), and that he would bring back free speech (he didn’t). Almost immediately, he changed the platform’s name to X and fired the mostly liberal executive team.

But he didn’t bring back free speech like he claimed he would; instead, all he did was reverse who controlled speech. He rewrote who had the power to censor and quickly became the leading culprit.

He began censoring those who criticized him, then all those he disagreed with. The top of this list included journalists from The New York Times, CNN, The Washington Post, and The Intercept. All without cause. He even censored former allies in the conservative movement, like rap artist Kanye West and commentator Laura Loomer.

In February 2026, I joined this list when I was banned without notice. I hadn’t even realized I was banned for a couple of weeks. I also never received an explanation of which rule I broke that had gotten me banned, because I never violated their Terms of Service (TOS).

After my appeal, my account was finally re-instated in March, but I still received no justification as to why I had been banned.

Instead, the platform shadow-banned me…

Shadow banning

is a social media moderation practice where a platform quietly restricts the visibility of a user’s account without notifying them. Posts look normal to the creator, but are effectively hidden from discovery surfaces like search results, feeds, and hashtags.

Elon’s takeover of X led many, including myself, to seek out a new app. Threads filled that gap. Meta Muzzles Threads Users

In July 2023, one year after Musk’s Twitter takeover, Meta, run by Mark Zuckerberg, launched a rival app — Threads.

Zuckerberg might be more Liberal in his ideology than Musk, but he is equally ruthless when it comes to business, a fact I would soon come to learn.

Zuckerberg’s Threads app accused of censoring accounts

When I was banned on X, I transitioned to Threads for a fresh start. It was easy to set up; all you needed to get started was an Instagram account, and I was optimistic for the future.

I began sharing my work, my opinions, and receipts for why I believed these, just like I did on X. Once again, my opinion seems to have pissed people off. But this time it was a different crowd.

While on X, I was mainly attacked by Trump-loving Conservatives and anti-semites, on Threads, I was mainly attacked by Liberals and Israeli Zionists. Two groups that could not be more opposite, except for the fact that they all wanted me censored.

For example, one post I made read “As a Jew, I believe Israel is the largest terrorist-state in the world.” The words “as a Jew” seem to have hit the algorithm hard because droves of Israeli Zionists came to my post to attack me. Wave after wave. The most common attack was to call me “not a real Jew” simply because I disagreed with them.

Some of them even falsely reported my account. Something similar happened when I criticized the DNC for rigging every Democratic primary. Liberals are meant to stand for freedom + tolerance. It seems today they stand for neither.

As a result, my account was shadowbanned on May 7th, despite running up 70,000 views in the previous 30 days.

All of my posts were still registered as being on the app. But they were completely hidden from me. Even worse, they were hidden from the public.

Canada’s Next Step in Censorship

Several countries around the world also have an agenda to censor public discourse and to use social media as a tool to do so. This may shock some of you, while others will not be shocked at all — Canada takes it a step further.

In June 2023, under the Trudeau government, Canada passed Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act. This bill would leave social media companies responsible for misinformation on their platforms and would require platforms like Facebook to pay millions to news companies whose content was featured on their page.

The result? Social media companies like Meta began blocking all news sources on their platform for their Canadian audience. This may seem like an unfortunate side effect of the bill, but this was the point.

Trudeau and other members of the Canadian government knew that by censoring these social media companies, they would be limiting access to information for the average user.

Sure, these platforms have TOS, which in some cases justifies these bans, but in general, they are meant to be marketplaces of ideas for the public to discuss and share information. Corporate and Federal interests have gotten in the way of this, not by accident, but because an informed and connected populace is a dangerous one.

Those behind the strings of power know this and are acting in their own best interests. It’s time we as a population do the same!
