Mark Carney Favors China Over The United States
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has been leading the charge in unifying Canadian and Chinese interests. On Monday, April 13, Carney’s Liberal party clinched the last seat they needed to maintain the Majority Government and keep him in charge.
Tensions with the United States
Following the Election of Donald Trump in November 2024, tensions have been rising between the United States and its Northern neighbor— Canada.
At first, the tension was built on differences of opinion between Trump and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, sports rivalry, and the seemingly empty threats of turning Canada into the 51st state.
Soon however it become very real, with the United States imposing harsh tariffs on all Canadian products in February 2025. Immediately after, on March 4, 2025, Canada announced their own retaliatory tariffs on all American produced goods.
Escalations continued with the United States considering even higher tariffs and other economic warfare and Canada doing the same. Some, like Ontario Premier Doug Ford,
even considered more drastic responses, including cutting off Canadian-supplied power to US cities, which could leave massive cities like New York without power
On October 23, 2025, recently elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told Canada and the world:
“This decades-long process of an ever closer economic relationship with the United States— is now over. And as a consequence, many of our former strengths as a country, strengths based on close ties to America, have become our vulnerabilities.”
Later in the speech, he added:
“Our relationship with the United States will never be the same as it was… Our goal for Canada is to double our non-US exports over the course of the next decade.”
What is a little more unusual is that Carney has taken a step towards Xi Jinping’s China.
Growing Canada-China Connections: Mark Carney Favors China Over The United States
China, of course, accepted Carney’s support and welcomed him with open arms.
According to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Xi Jinping reportedly said:
– “With a sense of responsibility for history, for the people and for the world, the two sides should advance the China-Canada new strategic partnership, steer their ties onto the track of sound, steady and sustainable development, and bring more benefits to both peoples.”
Meanwhile, Carney echoed this sentiment, describing their relationship as mutually beneficial and stating:
– “The progress that we have made, and the partnership, sets us up well for the New World Order… to create greater stability, security, sustainability, and prosperity for all of our peoples.”
When he visited China on January 15, he turned his words into action, securing a new energy deal on just day one of his trip.
According to reporting from TD Bank:
Canada, Ready to become the biggest state in America?
– Canada and China entered a new “a two-pronged strategic partnership”. This would include tariff reductions and eventually foreign investment benefits. – Over the next five years, Chinese direct investments are expected to grow as much as “ $90-100 billion”
– Investment momentum in Canada’s oil and gas sectors would be the highest, while more investments would potentially come over time for Tech, EV, and Agriculture. – These negotiations with China, have only led to further increasing tensions with the United States. This limits the immediate impact of some of these initiatives.
As of 2024, China was already Canada’s 5th largest investor. Now, as their relationship improves, and simultaneously Canada’s relationship with the United States worsens, China is hoping to take advantage and gain an even bigger market share.
It’s clear that Canada and China are building a stronger relationship, perhaps than ever before. But can China and its President Xi Jinping be trusted? More importantly, will this step to the East isolate Canada from its Western allies?
